by Morghen, Filippo

Centaurs of mythology were usually half man and half horse. Two of the images are half woman.

Set of four reproductions printed from 18th century copperplate-engravings coloured with gouache and watercolour. The original engravings of these frescoes were by eminent engravers and artists for the most important 18th century archaeological work, following the excavations of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. “Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposto” (Herculaneum Antiquities Exposed), published in Naples between 1757 and 1792 (under the patronage of King Charles II), to depict the archaelogical discoveries over a period of forty years from Herculaneum, a Roman municipium buried when Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD.

This is not a good scan. The image colouring is quite opaque - a combination of gouache and watercolour.
