Captain Cook's Great Barrier Reef, Far North Queensland. A Chart of part of New South Wales on the Coast of New Holland Discovered by Lieut.Cook - from Cape Tribulation to Endeavour Straits "Discovered by Lieut. Cook" in 1770. Under Explanation, Cook wrote "Rocks some of which are dry at low tide and others always covered".

Cook's chart of North Queensland coastline, with uncharted section, named Labrynth by Cook where Endeavour ran aground when it struck a rock in one of the Hope Islands (coral of the Great Barrier Reef, North Queensland). Jettisoning cargo, Endeavour ship was nursed off the reef and north into the Endeavour River for repair, near where Cooktown is today.

Great Britain needed a new Colony for convicts and free settlers, and possible extension of trade opportunities, so Lieutenant James Cook was sent to the southern hemisphere on his three voyages of discovery between 1768 and 1779, to search for the great southern continent which previous European explorers had surmised must exist.
