John Gould Australian Cockatoo, Great-billed Black Cockatoo print

by Gould, John

John Gould Red-tailed Black Cockatoo or Long-billed Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus Macrorhynchus.

Reproduction parrot print from John Gould's Birds of Australia hand-coloured lithograph by Henry Constantine Richter after drawing by Gould. Originally published in London between 1840 and 184.

Known as "the Bird Man" John Gould was a naturalist whose passion was the field ornithology. He combined his good eye for detail with business acumen, and with the assistance of his artist wife Elizabeth and other fine natural history lithographers illustrated the birds of the different regions of the world in large hand-coloured lithographs. By obtaining wealthy subscribers prior to each venture, John Gould was able to publish these superb illustrations in grand publications that have not been surpassed to this day.
