The Redan, View of the Interior. Cannons engraving. Tallis c1856

by John Tallis & Company

Cannons antique print. Crimean War Battle of Redan, known as the Battle of the Great Redan, fought between Britain and Russia in 1855, - with a description of the layout of the battle parapets and cannons, and the lines of the trenches and the approaching Allies in the background.

Original steel engraving 'by H. Bibby from a photograph by Robertson of Constantinople' published in London c1856 in typical style of Tallis and Company who by the time of publication had formed the London Printing & Publishing Company. Tallis was renowned for high quality engravings, usually embellished by finely engraved swirling borders - in this case incorporating flowers and vines, with a small military figure at each side at the base, and several military figures each side of the title which is within a banner centrally below the main scene.

The text at the base of the page states, "The Redan was shaped thus (with a V diagram), with flanking parapets extending from each extremity. Each side was 255 feet (nearly 8 metres) in length, and mounted nine 68 pounders; there was also one 68 pounder in the angle, and five in each of the flanking parapets; in all 29 guns. The exterior averaged from 30 to 35 feet in width along its entire front, and was from 8 to 10 feet in height; and was formed of sand-bags, gabions, fascines, young trees, poles, &c, tied together in bundles. The lines in the background show the trenches and approaches of the Allies."

Later hand-colour has been added to this engraving which certainly improves appreciation of the definition of this engraving. There is a slight tear at the left edge, reinforced with conservation tape. The price has been reduced in recognition of this damage.

Page size, 18 x 27cm (7 x 10.5 inches).
