by John Tallis & Company

Antique print of the Death of General Sir Ralph Abercromby, K.G. with Lutz Capturing the Standard of the Legion engraved below, and military figures engraved each side of the main scene. "From an ancient and respectable family", Abercromby was a Scottish soldier and politician. Sir Ralph Abercromby (sometimes spelt Abercrombie) (1734-1801) was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, was noted for his services during the Napoleonic Wars, and served as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland. Abercromby 's command restored discipline and prestige to the British army after the disastrous campaigns in the Low countries between 1793 and 1799. He died in Alexandria, Egypt and is buried at Malta.

Fine steel engraving by J. Rogers after a drawing by T. Stothard Esquire, R.A., published in London circa 1856 by the London Printing & Publishing Company, in the traditional style of Tallis publishing house. John Tallis joined Ephraim Tipton Brain in 1853 to form the new London Printing & Publishing Company which continued to publish works with this labour-intensive, exquisite detail.

Great military battles were recorded by artists on the field, and transposed to wonderfully graphic action scenes. British battle scenes have always been collectable. As with many of these early engravings, hand-colour has been added at a later date to further enhance the image.

The page size is 18 x 27cm (7 x 10.5 inches).
