General Windham in the Redan, Sept. 8th 1855.

by John Tallis & Company

Antique print of Crimean War with Russia c1855. Known as the Battle of the Great Redan, between British forces against Russia in 1855, towards the end of the Siege of Sevastopol. Acting Brigadier General Charles Ashe Windham commanded two brigades in the assault against the enemy's defences, and was promoted out of turn to Major-General for 'his distinguished conduct in having with the greatest intrepidity and coolness headed the column of attack'.

Original steel engraving by T. Hollis after a drawing by J. Hind. Published in London circa 1856 (with later hand-colour), by the famous Tallis publishing house, which by this time had become The London Printing & Publishing Company. From a series of scenes of great naval and military battles fought by the English, this wonderful action scene is surrounded at the base by finely engraved swirling foliage which surrounds the title and the two side vignettes of supporting battle scenes.

There is a slight water stain at top left. The price takes this into consideration. Page size, 18 x 27cm (7 x 10.5 inches).
