by The Illustrated London News

Antique print of New Steam-ship Orient, c1879.
This is a superb engraving, after a drawing by the principal marine artist for The Illustrated London News, Joseph Robert Wells (fl.1872-1895). It was published on October 4, 1879 in The Illustrated London News.

The Illustrated London News periodical was the world's first graphic newspaper. From the beginning, illustrated news was popular, selling hundreds of thousands of copies each edition (in particular with news of any wars around the world). Engraved illustrations were the main attraction. They were avidly collected, and coloured for further enjoyment (as with this engraving).

This hand-coloured engraving has been mounted in antique-white conservation mattboard, ready for framing, and is cellophaned for protection (reflection line in scan). An image of the reverse of this page is enclosed at the rear of this mounted engraving.  Size of engraving within window is 190 x 235 (7.5 x 9.25 inches). Full page size was 40 x 27cm (15.75 x 10.5 inches). External measurement of mount, for framing, is 37 x 51 cm (14.5 x 20 inches).
