Nodder antique print of Avicula for George Shaw.

Original hand-coloured copperplate engraving circa 1810, drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder (1774-1823) for “Naturalist’s Miscellany; Or, Coloured Figures of Natural Objects Drawn & Described Immediately from Nature” by George Shaw (1751-1813). Published in London between 1789 and 1813 the 24 volumes of illustrations were accompanied by text in Latin and English (available for this engraving).

In illustrating this important work Richard Nodder (1774-1823) followed his father, Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751-1801) who was appointed "botanic painter to Her Majesty" Queen Charlotte in 1785.  Richard exhibited at the Royal Academy and was botanic painter to King George III.

After graduating from Oxford University in 1772, George Shaw (1751-1813) began working in the medical profession, but changed careers in 1786 when he became assistant lecturer in Botany at Oxford. He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society in 1788 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789. Shaw was appointed assistant-keeper of the zoological department of the British Museum in 1791.
