Antique Print of beautiful views throughout Fiji, c1885.

Original wood engraving by W.J.H. Boot for The Illustrated London News, published in London on October 17, 1885.

English oil and watercolour artist, William Henry James Boot (1848-1918),  exhibited at the Royal Academiy in London and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.

These engravings are among the finest ever done for the newspaper periodicals that became popular in nineteenth century Britain. The Illustrated London News was the world's first graphic newspaper. It was published weekly from 1842 to 1971. Illustrated news became increasingly popular, with hundreds of thousands of each edition sold - and even more when it included news of any wars around the world. The illustrations undoubtedly improved circulation numbers. Engravings were cut out and kept, and were often water-coloured for greater enjoyment. The method of illustration varied as more practical technology was introduced, but following the introduction of photography, publication gradually reduced in frequency until The Illustrated London News finally ceased publication in 2003.
