Melbourne from the St Kilda Road. JC Armytage c1874.

by Armytage, J.C.

Antique Print of St Kilda Road in Melbourne c1874.

Lovely fine original steel engraving drawn and engraved by the prominent English topographical artist/engraver, James Charles Armytage (1802-1897) for Edwin Carton Booth's Australia Illustrated published in London in 1874 by Virtue & Company. Armytage was one of the principal artists for this wonderful publication. He did not visit Australia. He draughted scenes from paintings, photographs and sketches by others who had visited Australia.

This is one of the most important early view of this great metropolis. All the engravings from this series are eminently collectable as superb recordings of life in colonial Australia, prior to major development.

This rather special early view of Melbourne is a finely engraved, uncoloured antique print with wide margins as published. It is in good condition except for a little soiling, which is to be expected when it is over 240 years old. Page measures 215 x 270mm (8 1/2 x 10 5/8 inches). The size of this image is 130cm x 200m (approximately 5 1/8 x 7 7/8 inches).
