by D'Urville, Dumont

Hobart scene, Convicts and Soldier antique print. Hobart-town, du cote des Casernes. (Hobart-town at the edge of the Barracks). Group de Convicts dans un Défrichement (Group of Convicts in a Clearing).

Original copperplate engraving after Louis Auguste de Sainson (1801-1887), was published in Paris circa 1835 for Voyages Pittoresque Autour de Monde (Picturesque Voyages around the World), by French explorer and naval officer Jules-Sebastien-Cesar-Dumont d’Urville (1790-1842).

Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville captained Astrolabe when exploring the south and west Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. D'Urville combined engravings from the drawings by his official expedition artist Louis Auguste de Sainson (1801-1887), with sketches and engravings from previous voyages (notably those from Captain Cook's third voyage between 1776 and 1780).

The page measures approximately 265 x 175mm (10.3/8 x 7 inches). The individual engravings measure approximately 90 x 120mm ( 3 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches). This page has fine later hand-colour.
