Adelaide from the River Torrens. Antique print c1886.

by Schell, Frederick B.

Fine antique print. Early Adelaide on the River Torrens in South Australia. An idyllic scene engraved on wood by A. Irwin from a drawing by F.B. Schell for publication in Picturesque Atlas of Australasia. This fine wood engraving has superb later hand-colour.

When 28 years of age, American topographical artist Frederick B. Schell (1857-1906) was commissioned to come to Australia as Art Director for the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company. This company was specifically set up to publish the grand Picturesque Atlas of Australasia between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement, since the arrival in 1788 of the First Fleet from Britain. The scenes of towns, country, flora, fauna, industry and lifestyle provide a wonderful record of early colonial life.

 Engraving measurement is 7 x 11 7/8 inches (approximately 18 x 30cm)
