Ipswich was proposed capital of Moreton Bay colony which became Queensland (with capital city of Brisbane).

Original wood engraving after a sketch by Australian artist Julian Rossi Ashton (1851-1942) for Picturesque Atlas of Australasia published between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement, since the First Fleet arrival at Botany Bay in 1788. The illustrations for this publication were some of the finest engravings of the late 19th century. Uncoloured when published, these engravings have traditionally been hand-tinted with watercolour for further enhancement.

Full page engravings were inserted without printing on the reverse, but most of the engravings were printed within a page of text - as with this one. Published in black and white, this engraving has been hand-tinted with watercolour, which certainly makes it more decorative. The engraving has been mounted between cream conservation archival board, and cellophaned for presentation and protection, ready for framing. Size of engraving is approximately 16 x 18cm (6.5 x 7 inches).  External mounted size is 29 x 33cm (11.5 x 13 inches).
