Sydney Harbour from Shark Point, with shipping c1886

by Schell, Frederick B.

Antique print of Sydney Harbour from Vaucluse c1886. The Steel Point Battery at Shark Point in Vaucluse was established in 1871. The other two batteries were the Signal Hill Battery at Watson's Bay and the Ben Buckler Gun Battery at Bondi - all of which worked in conjunction with other Sydney Harbour fortifications and defences built around this period.

Original wood engraving after a sketch by New York-born artist Frederick B. Schell (1838-1905), from his 1884-1888 travels around Australia. At the age of 29 Schell was appointed Art Director to select the illustrations for “Picturesque Atlas of Australasia” by the Honourable Andrew Garran, M.A., LL.D., M.L.C., who published this grand graphic summary in Sydney between 1886 and 1889, to commemorate 100 years of settlement in Australia, and to record the discovery and development of the region during that period.

This engraving is in good condition with later hand colour. It is mounted in antique white acid-free archival mattboard and covered with cellophane for presentation, and protection ready for framing. Size of engraving is 5 x 10 inches or 13 x 26cm. External mounted size is 11 x 16 inches or 28 x 40cm.
