Wine-making. Auldana Vineyard. Penfolds winery. Antique Print c1886.

by Garran, Andrew

Australian vineyard antique print. Auldana Vineyard, later Penfolds South Australian vineyard.

A wonderful record of the early years of a vineyard, now Penfolds Winery, which has since become internationally-renowned and respected. Scotsman, Patrick Auld (1811-1886) planted the Auldana Vineyard at Magill in South Australia in1852. He sold this vineyard to the South Auldana Vineyard Association in 1862, but continued management of the vineyard until the company 'wind-up' in 1865, after which his son, William Patrick Auld, assumed management. Thomas Auld sold to a neighbour, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold, in 1942.

Original engraving c1886 with later fine hand-colour. This engraving was printed within a text page of Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, published between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate one hundred years since First Fleet settlement at Port Jackson in Sydney.

Image measures 105 x 180mm (approximately 4.25 x 7 inches).
