In Beaulieu Garden. Beaulieu dans les Fleurs. c1920
by Bonfils, Robert
Fashionably dressed ladies in gardens... madam on balcony. Manteau et Robes d'apres-midi. Fabulously modern splashes of colour in afternoon dresses and coats.
Wonderful double-size vertical pochoir fashion plate by Robert Bonfils for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), the exclusive periodical where the latest Paris couturier's fashions were presented to the public in appropriate settings, by the premier fashion illustrators. (This was the only double-page vertical pochoir from Gazette du Bon Ton.)
Published around 10 times a year between 1913 and 1925, Gazette du Bon Ton was composed of 8 to 10 individually hand-coloured pochoirs, bound in booklet form for exclusive subscription. Numerous stencils were cut for each pochoir to enable successive applications of ink, gouache and watercolours, to build up the depth and finesse of colour. The illustration of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and 'pochoir' the French word for stencil has always been used worldwide to describe this work.
