by Barbier, George
George Barbier c1915: VICHY (II) ou Le Jeu des Marionnettes. Playing with Puppets. Ladies and their daughters with puppets at the resort town of Vichy in France c1915.
A very rare double-size original hand-coloured pochoir fashion plate circa 1915 by George Barbier (1882-1932) for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), an exclusive periodical with finely drawn fashion illustrations hand-coloured with gouache and watercolour. The premier fashion artists illustrated and introduced Paris couturiers'latest designs, and showed them in a typical situation where they should be worn. George Barbier excelled in characterization and beautifully portrayed the lifestyle of the wealthy at that time.
This was one of the few double-page fashion illustrations, measuring 24 x 38 mm (9.5 x 15 inches), with the image measuring approximately 16 x 31.5 mm (6.25 x 12.5 inches).
