by Brissaud, Pierre

Young ladies and girl. Afternoon dresses by Jeanne Lanvin. Robes de jeunes filles et d'enfant pour l'apres-midi de Jean Lanvin.

Original hand-coloured pochoir by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), published in Paris in 1914 to illustrate the latest superior fashion.

Pochoir was the labour-intensive method of illustration by hand-colouring with penand watercolour, using separate stencils for each colour for consistency. The finest French fashion illustrators mastered the art so well that pochoir, the French word for stencil has been used for their work ever since it was done. Prior to the introduction of photography, hand-coloured fashion stencils were used for each fashion illustration in the best fashion periodicals to introduce the latest designs of Paris couturiers. Gazette du Bon Ton, published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925, was aimed at the upper classes and showed fashion in superior settings.
