Gold framed Raphael pilaster pair. Engraved antique print c1800

Gold framed Raphael pilaster pair. Engraved antique print c1800

by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

Beautiful gold-framed classical engraving of superb Raphael frescoes from two sides of a pilaster (pillar) in the Loggia to the Pope's private residence at the Vatican. Exquisitely engraved and hand-coloured with gouache and watercolour, this is an original copperplate engraving by draughtsman, artist, etcher and engraver Carlo Lasinio (1759-1838).

Raphael Vatican artwork devised for the frescos by the exceptional Renaissance artist, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), and painted by his assistants during the last two years of his life. One engraving circa 1800 of a pair of Raphael pilaster frescos for Logge del Vaticano (Loggia of the Vatican), published in Rome circa 1787 by Niccola de Antoni and in Paris circa 1802 by Pierre Choffard. Pairs of the pilaster frescos were engraved, half the size of the grand single pilasters published in Rome between 1772 and 1777 for Delle Loggie di Raffaello nel Vaticano (Of the Loggia by Raphael at the Vatican).

The picture does not do justice to this beautifully framed, exquisitely engraved and hand-coloured antique print. Engraving to plate mark measures 37 x 50 cm. External frame measurement: 72 x 52cm.

These rare 18th century examples of Raphael classical frescoes are available in Sydney from Antique Decorative Art, Shop 2, The Macleay Regis, 12 Macleay Street, Potts Point 2021
