Picart engraved gem, Hercules cum Iole. Teucri. Opus. c1725

by Picart, Bernard

18th century antique print of Hercules cum Iole. Teucri. Opus. (Hercules with Princess Iole of Ochalia whom he loved most).

Original copperplate engraving circa 1725 by Bernard Picart (1673-1733), of a (much magnified) antique fragment. This rare engraving is in good condition. Though published in black and white, the stunning hand-color is complimentary to the style and period of the work.

Stephen Picart instructed his son Bernard in design and engraving. When 16, Bernard gained the prize at the Academy of Paris. Gaining distinction in France as both a designer and engraver, he moved to Amsterdam in 1710 and became an important printmaker, developing a visual style that combined Dutch and French influences.
