Keulemans Sacred Ibis beautiful hand-coloured lithograph c1870

by Keulemans, John Gerrard

Serene image of the Sacred Ibis, antique print by Keulemans, exquisitely delineated and superbly coloured by JGK.

Original hand-coloured lithograph by eminent bird illustrator and naturalist John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) for "Birds of Europe" published in London between 1870 and 1876 by Henry Eeles Dresser.

Keulemans' skill in the art of lithography is evident in his hand-coloured lithographs. In 1869 fellow ornithologist and colleague of John Gould, Richard Bowdler-Sharpe persuaded the well-travelled Dutchman Keulemans to move from Brussels to London, the most important centre for publications illustrating birds.

The picture does not reflect the brilliance of the actual image. Excellent condition.
Size of plate, as published, is 30 cm x 25 cm (12 inches x 9.3/4 inches)
