Melbourne from the Yarra antique engraving-lithograph c1886

by Schell, Frederick B.

Antique print of shipping on the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia.

Original wood engraving by J. Hellawell after painter, etcher and engraver of marine, coastal and river subjects, New York-born artist Frederick B. Schell (1838-1905), from his 1884-1888 travels around Australia. At the age of 29 Schell was commissioned by the Honourable Andrew Garran, M.A., LL.D., M.L.C., to select the illustrations for the “Picturesque Atlas of Australasia”. This antique print was from a special edition with the major engraved illustrations printed onto a sepia colour-printed lithographic background of Australian flora and design-work incorporating art nouveau-style foliage (by LB). Published for Picturesque Atlas of Australasia published in Sydney circa 1886-1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement in Australia.

This is a lovely antique print with fine later hand-colour. The lithographic border has been clipped and has lost the upper and lower right-hand corners, but would still frame beautifully. The measurement to the black border within the lithograph is 175 x 280mm (9 x 11 inches). The page measures 255 x 355mm (10 x 14 inches).
