Original copperplate engraving by Pierre Jacques Duret, published in Paris circa 1774 for the French edition, after the London publication in 1773 of John Hawkesworth’s Account of Cook’s Voyages. From the sketch by Sydney Parkinson (c1745-1771), natural history artist employed by Joseph Banks on Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific, this important illustration is the first known landscape of the east coast of Australia, is a great illustration of Cook’s ship, Endeavour. This is also the first illustration of the site of the Cooktown pier in the Endeavour River.

James Cook (1728-1779) discovered and charted the east coast of Australia and named it New South Wales, during his first voyage from 1768 to 1771. For more than a hundred years, navigators used Cook’s meticulous charting of the east coast of Australia.
