by Jones, Inigo

Classical architectural design proposed by Inigo Jones for the Royal Palace, Whitehall.
(The main London royal residence from 1530 to 1698, this palace with over 1,500 rooms was the largest palace in Europe when, except for the Banqueting House, it was destroyed in the great fire of London in 1698.)

Original copperplate engraving circa 1725 by Henrik Hulsbergh after a drawing by Henry Flitcroft of Inigo Jones architectural design. Inigo Jones (1573-1652) was the first to introduce classical Italian Renaissance architecture to Gothic Britain. His designs were elegant simplicity in comparison with the previous heavy Tudor architectural design. Jones believed strict mathematical proportion should control plan, elevation and all structure.

The digital image does not do justice to this exquisite work. This engraving has beautiful later hand-colour, and is in good condition. Page size is 50 x 66cm (19.75 x 26 inches). Size to plate mark is 250 x 495 mm (10 x 19.5 inches).
