Patagonian Maras or Patagonian Hare - often a pet.

This fine original hand-coloured copperplate engraving circa 1840, is from a series engraved by Pauquet, Madame Thorel, Massard, Oudet, LeBrun, LeGrand and Guyard after the drawings by Meunier, Jean-Gabriel Pretre, Edouard Travies and Chazal. Published in Paris circa 1840 by Pourrat Brothers for "Suites a Buffon" by Zoology Professor, Paris Natural History Museum, Bernard Germain Etienne de la Ville sur Illon, Comte de Lacepede (1756-1825), updating the most comprehensive 18th century French colourplate series, "Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere avec la description du cabinet du roi" (Natural History, General and Particular), originally published between 1765 and 1780 by Georg-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788).
