Antique print of a typical truffle dog, Mrs. Malcolm's Truffle Dog "Judy".

Original wood engraving circa 1878 (with later fine hand-colour. Engraved by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by L. Wells for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published in 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888).

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. A passionate sportman,and an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses, Walsh became a sporting writer. He wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor. "The Dogs of the British Islands was a well respected publication and the illustrations have always been collected. 

There is a bend to the paper corner at top left, and a tear out of the corner at lower right. The price has been reduced considerably. Page size 24 x 18 cm (9.5 x 7 inches). Engraved area is 11 x 13 cm (approximately 4 3/8 x 5 1/8 inches).
