Finely engraved small antique map of the British Isles by Vaugondy c1760.

This lovely little British Isles antique map was engraved on very fine hand-made paper by Jean Lattre in the middle of the 18th century. The map was drawn by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1686-1766) and published in Paris circa 1760. Robert de Vaugondy, Senior, was Geographer in Ordinary to the King (Louis XV), and to His Polish Majesty, Duke of Lorraine and Duke of Bar, and to the Royal Society of Nancy, and Royal Sensor. (His son, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy succeeded him.)

Jean Lattre flourished as a mapmaker between 1743 and 1793. A bookseller, engraver, and mapmaker, Lattre published a number of maps and atlases in conjunction with other cartographers, including Vaugondy, Jean Janvier, Rigobert Bonne and Charles Delamarche in France, Santini in Italy, and William Faden in London. He was appointed Graveur Ordinaire du Roi (Engraver in Ordinary to the King) from 1776 to 1782.

This small map has an repair at the base of the central vertical fold that accommodated a publication half its size. Paper size is165 x 165mm (6.5 x 6.5 inches) Whilst the colour is faded it would have been done in the last 50 years. The small repair at the base will not show when framed, if it is mounted with white behind it.
