Beautiful antique map of France Provinces. Charles Smith c1836.

by Smith, Charles

Beautiful original hand-colour French Provinces antique map, c1836.

Original copperplate-engraved map with contemporary hand-colour (from time of publication), for Smith’s New General Atlas containing Distinct maps of all the Principal Empires, Kingdoms and States throughout the World, Carefully delineated from all the best Authorities. First published in London in 1808 by Charles Smith at No 172 Strand, this fine atlas was reissued a number of times, including this edition of 1836.

Smith’s maps were a great success, notably for the fine geographical detail, high quality paper and excellent hand-colouring. They were decorative, with countries or counties outlined, and soft internal watercolouring of the featured areas in each map. By 1834 Charles Smith had become “Mapseller extraordinary to His Majesty” (William IV).

This map is in fine condition and measures 265 x 340 mm (10.3/8 x 13.3/8 inches) to map border. Page size is 305 x 400mm (12 x 15.3/4 inches)
