Asia Minor antique map by John Tallis, c1853

by John Tallis & Company

Tallis antique map of Asia Minor, with Olympus, Rhodes, Turks and sailing vessel c1853. The map is surrounded by a dramatic border that compliments the character of the region of the map. As published in 1853, with regions outlined in pen and pale blue wash along the coastline - with additional fine colour to the border and vignettes. Published by John Tallis & Company, London & New York, with map drawn and engraved by John Rapkin and illustrations drawn by H. Warren and engraved by J.H. Kernot.

With a series of partners John Tallis published a unique style of maps between 1850 and 1865. In 1853 the partnership of John Tallis and Ephraim Tipton Brain formed The London Printing and Publishing Company. John Tallis was the driving force behind the Tallis publishing company, but John Rapkin was largely responsible for their reputation as publishers of accurate, finely engraved decorative maps. Tallis maps are easily recognized by their steel engraved vignettes of important subjects in the region, and elegantly engraved fine borders. Specialist map illustrators drew the illustrations, and then engraved a steel plate, in reverse from a mirror image. The fine engraving required skill and time. Unfortunately it was also expensive. Tallis was among the last of the publishers of beautifully decorated maps and prints.

This beautiful map is in fine condition with superb hand-colour and wide borders. If you would like additional image please email sales@antiqueprintclub.com. Page size is 275 x 370 (10 3/4  x 14 1/2 inches)
