Probably the greatest military leader of the ancient world, the warrior-king Alexander III, who became known as Alexander the Great, was born in Macedonia in 356BC. Conquering territories stretching from Greece to Egypt and through what is now Turkey, Iran and Pakistan, he became the king of Persia, Babylon and Asia, and created Macedonian colonies in Iran. He is credited with saying "There is nothing impossible to him who will try." I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well." and "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion." Alexander the Great died of Malaria in Babylon, Persia, in 323BC.
