Large original antique map of Papua New Guinea, showing Cape York in north Australia and adjacent islands to New Guinea, and with an inset of the latest discoveries along the north coast of New Guinea. This large map was printed in colour circa 1888 by The Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company of Sydney & Melbourne to commemorate 100 years since First Fleet arrival at Sydney.

Encompassing the time of early Spanish and Dutch explorers, the landing of Captain Cook in 1770, and subsequent exploration in the region, Picturesque Atlas of Australasia was the finest publication on the discovery and early development of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the neighbouring Pacific Islands. 

It is difficult to obtain a good image of this large map. Please email if you would like a close-up of any area. Printed across two pages, this map has slight soiling down central vertical fold. Approximate external size is 44 x 64 cm (17.25 x 25.25 inches).
