Important early recording of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Original copperplate-engraved map by Pieter van den Keere (c1571-c1624) for Bernardt Langenes’ Caert-Thrésoor miniature atlas. First published by Cornelis Claesz in Amsterdam circa 1598 and 1599, this map is from the rare French edition of 1602, with further text on the reverse.

This finely-engraved map with decorative strapwork cartouche is thought to be the first separate map of New Guinea. The northern coastline of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are well detailed with many place names.

This map is a little soiled. The map measures 90 x 125mm (3.5 x 5 inches). Page size is 110 x 170mm (4.3/8 x 5.5/8 inches).
