Captain Carteret's voyage: Saint George's Channel to Mindanao, 1767.

This antique map of the Philippines has three segments, Banc de Sable dangereux, Isles de Joseph Freewill, and L'Extremite Meridionale de Mindanao, engraved by Benard for The Passage from Saint George's Channel to the Island of Mindanao, with an Account of many Islands that were seen, and Incidents that Happened by the Way, for the French edition of John Hawkesworth's Account of the Voyages... in the Southern Hemisphere published in London by William Strahan and Thomas Cadell in June 1773. (The British Admiralty approved Hawkesworth's edition of Captain Cook's First Voyage, in which Hawkesworth adapted the text of Cook's journals, and which was published without Cook's approval.)

As well as the vertical fold necessary for publication in a smaller volume, this page has additional creasing and paper stretching. Page 26 x 26cm (10.25 x 10.25 inches). To map intaglio impression measures 21.5 x 20cm (8.1/4 x 7.7/8 inches).
