Rare copperplate-engraved map of Asia by Jesuit geographer Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae novae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta.. (New Atlas exhibiting the lands, their nature, historic monuments, artistic geographical laws and rules), an early thematic atlas published in Munich between 1702 and 1710, during the period Scherer was royal tutor to the courts of Mantua and Bavaria.

Scherer's maps are renowned for their imaginative geographical presentation, and are instantly recognisable in the strongly defined engraving and unusual imagery. The wonderful cartouche features an elephant, lion, camel, monkeys and exotic birds; and there are ocean monsters, and various animals across the land.

This map is in fine condition with central vertical fold to accommodate the publication. To the map border measure 230 x 350mm (9 x 14 inches). The double page measures 275 x 370mm (10.75 x 14.5 inches).
