A New Map of North America, agreeable to the Latest discoveries by Robert Wilkinson. London, c1794.

Beautiful original map engraved on copper by Thomas Conder for Robert Wilkinson's A General Atlas being A Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters, the Principal Empires, Kingdoms, &c (etc) with their several Provinces, and other Subdivisions Correctly Delineated published in London circa 1794 with contemporary hand-colour.

This map has beautiful colour that Wilkinson colour-coded according to political regions. The relatively new United States with the original 13 counties are shown in green, British Controlled Territories are red, Spanish America is yellow, and the small stretch of Russian America is blue. All land west of the Mississippi is shown as Spanish - to British Columbia, New Albion (as Upper California was named by Sir Francis Drake in 1578), the Colorado River, and the speculative River of the West. Many American Indian nations are shown, including the fabled Kingdom of Gold, Quivara. Captain James Cook's charting of Alaska and America's north-west coast are included, as well as the overland exploration to the Arctic Sea by Samuel Herne and Alexander McKenzie.

Robert Wilkinson flourished between 1768 and 1825 as a London-based map and atlas publisher. The paper is slightly age discoloured, and has a foxing spot outside border at top. The map has good margins, distinct intaglio impression, and superb original 'contemporary' colour.

Size is approximately 30 x 24cm (12 x 9.5 inches).
