Beautiful colour-printed steel-engraved map with the intricate, stylishly engraved border associated with Colton map publishers. In 1859 Colton sold their map plates to Alvin Jewitt Johnson, who continued to publish elaborately bordered maps in the style created by George Woolworth Colton for Colton's Atlas of the World in 1855. A.J. Johnson, with a succession of partners, followed this popular tradition of map presentation up until 1885.
This map is in fair condition except for slight staining at the lower base of the page. To its border the map measure 495 x 290mm (19.1/2 x 11.1/2 inches). The page size is 460 x 350 (approximately 18 x 13.3/4 inches).
